Greetings fellow
Triskelion. In the past years of our Triskelion Life, I am certain, that
in one way or another, we have experienced some remarkable events or circumstances
that we may consider mysterious. Our logo, handshake and color are examples
of those mysteries. Personally, I also have some mysteries to share; during
my freshman and sophomore years, when I wasn't yet a Triskelion, I was one
of the biggest antagonist of fraternities. I never really believed in the
significance of Greek-lettered Fraternities, but in spite of all those mental
contradictions, I could not believed that I became a Fratman myself. Now,
isn't that mysterious? Well, it is to me. This is one of the reasons that
made me believed that all of us are called to be a Triskelion, and it's
just in a matter of time that we will all see our calling.
To be a Triskelion is just like to be an Engineer, or a Doctor, or an Architect,
etc… Like for instance, how many Civil Engineers do we have now in the entire
country? A lot of them of course, and I am sure that they came from different
schools. Some schools produce more and some produce less; some are renowned
to be excellent and some are not; some get a high passing percentage on board
exams and some do not. But one thing for sure is that, all of those who passed
the Board Exam are still Engineers regardless of whichever school they graduated
from. So at the end of the day, what matters most is not on how you became an
Engineer but on what kind of an Engineer you become. And in the same manner,
it's not on how we became a Triskelion but on what kind of a Triskelion we become.
What makes us unique among other fraternities is that we have a distinct "Way
of Life"; the "Triskelion Way of Life". Remember brothers and sisters that at
the end of our lifetime, our being a Triskelion will not be measured on the
kind of initiation we went through but rather on the "Way of Life" we lived
through. Would you all believed that if we based our brotherhood on the number
of paddles we received that it will show that we are not all equal? Some received
more paddles than the others; some were hospitalized and others were not; some
spent more time nursing the injuries and some were just okay the day after being
initiated. Some chapters administer more paddles than the others; for example
if a chapter has more number of local founders then it will have more paddles.
Some chapters even paddles the name of all MDG's in their respective chapter.
But will all these differences really signifies inequality? Of course not, because
our equality is not based on the physical thing but on the Principles we earned
by surviving the Initiation Process. What is important in our initiation process
is that it is not easy to pass through; that it is not a walk in the park. What
matters most is actually the degree of difficulty that an applicant will undergo;
we have to be more conscious about that.
In our everyday life, we always have a destination. Like going to our offices
or schools or to movies or malls and many more. But let us try to analyze one
particular destination, for example, going to Baclaran. In this case, we may
take the bus in going there, or the public utility jeepneys, or we take the
LRT or MRT, or we may jug our way if we want to. So many ways and options, so
many roads and vehicles to choose from. Some routes will be fast and some will
be slow, some routes are far and some are near, but no matter which way we take,
we will still arrive at the same destination, and this case we are talking of
Baclaran as our destination. With regard to this, the normal tendency for us
humans is that we take the same route all the time in going to a certain destination
because of familiarity and convenience. Well, it's natural for us to always
choose a way we are very comfortable with and the only way we change routes
is if there's a road-block or road problems like heavy traffics and deep excavations.
But again, if the familiar route is back to normal then we always love to take
that road again, unless if the road-block is permanent.
Now let us examine another kind of destination, the destiny of becoming a Triskelion.
How many roads are there to become a Triskelion? Well, we are only familiar
with one, and that is the "way of the paddle". For so many years, we had considered
only one way of initiating our neophytes, and that's the "hazing" process we
are very familiar of, and it is still a very much valid way to take but the
risk is getting high. Why? Because there's a huge road-block; the R.A. 8049
or otherwise known as the Anti-hazing Law. We are now in a dilemma of whether
to continue our "hazing" tradition and ignoring the Law or shall we find a legal
alternative initiation process which will not violate the R.A. 8049. Well, in
my humble opinion, I believe it is time to create or formulate an Alternative
Initiation Procedure; it is time for us to open our eyes and realize that there
may be a lot of roads to produce a Triskelion. Yes, it is time for us to construct
a new road for creating Triskelions, specially now that there's a permanent
road-block. Now the question is, will this road-block invalidates our Traditional
Initiation? Well definitely not. The old way is still a valid process "internally"
but the risk is so very high, and we don't have the resources to take that risk
right now. So, what shall we do? Do we have to stop our recruitment and just
concentrate on the Alumni? Or shall we try our very best to formulate or create
an Alternative Process which will not violate the R.A. 8049? My dear brothers
and sisters, it's all in our hands.
Together, we can do it. Mabuhay ang Tau Gamma Phi!
Always in the true Triskelion Spirit,
Bro. Mitchell L. Flores, MDG |
